NORMAL VITAL SIGNS
Knowing your horse's vital signs are vital. If you are familiar
with what is normal for your horse, you will be more qualified to know
when your horse is in distress and needs professional help.
It is very helpful for you to know the vital signs if you need to call
your veterinarian to help them assess the situation. See the form
below for your use.

37.5 - 38.5 degrees Celcius (99.5 - 100.5 degrees F) |
| Respiration: |
16 - 24 breaths per minute |
| Pulse Rate:
|
40 - 60 beats per minute. Feel pulse rate by lightly pressing
fingers along inside of jawbone or use stethoscope to get heart rate instead.
The heart rate is taken on the left side of horse immediately behind the
left elbow. |
| Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Tract Motility: |

should return to normal postriiton within 1 -2 seconds. Abnormal
suggests dehydration. |
| Capillary Refill Time (CRT): |
1 - 2 seconds. Press your thumb against the gum above upper teeth
and release. wait for light pink color to return. |
Below is a form for you to record your horse's vital
signs, both when he/she is healthy and if he/she seems unwell. Practice
taking vital signs when you and your horse are both relaxed and record
your results. This is very important information to have on hand
when dealing with a health situation.
